FLINDERS SULLA |
|
Flinders is a new biennial forage legume ideal for short pasture
rotations in both mixed farming and grazing systems. Flinders is
a deep rooting, non bloating, drought tolerant, highly productive
sulla with its main growing period from autumn to early summer.
It is an erect growing plant that grows to 1.5 metres, it provides
enhanced animal production and also makes excellent hay and
silage.
New Zealand researchers have found that condensed tannins
responsible for sulla’s non-bloating ability also produce a by-pass
protein effect which produces additional live weight gains of about
10% and reduces worm burdens.
Flinders is adapted to slightly acidic to alkaline, well drained soils
having a pH of 5.5 – 8.0 (CaCl2) and grows poorly on acidic or
waterlogged soils, but will tolerate some salinity.
It can tolerate a wide range of conditions and can be grown in
areas having annual rainfall minimums from 500 mm or greater.
